THE BEGINNING OF THE ENDIt's a fiercely hot summer, so hot that the north pole's heat record is broken by fifty degrees. Massive ice melt stuns the world as open ocean appears at the pole for the first time in living memory. Deep under the Atlantic Ocean, currents crucial to life react, dropping south -- and suddenly, storms of unprecedented ferocity start exploding over the arctic as cold air returns, slamming into the heat with cataclysmic results. The storms grow until they form a bizarre and gigantic blizzard unlike anything ever seen before. A stunned humanity realizes that a second ice age is about to engulf the earth. Climatologist Jack Hall tried to warn people of the approaching peril -- but it may already be too late for any hope of survival. Now he must not only find a way to reverse the rampant ecological destruction that is transforming the world into a frigid wasteland, but also rescue his rebellious son, who is one of the millions trapped in the icy depths of a frozen New York City. Now a Major Motion Picture from Twentieth Century Fox Customer reviews: A survival Story, 2007-12-21 What happens when the effects of Global Warming suddenly show, well by reading The Day after Tomorrow, you hear a story of the trouble and danger it causes. This is a survival story on Jack Hall who is a climatologist and his partners. When Jack was at work, he saw the readings of the temperatures all over the world and knew it did not mean anything good. In some places temperatures were rising dramatically and other's where the temperature was dropping quickly, which meant a storm would be forming soon.
Jack Hall and his son Sam do not have a close relationship because of his travel for work. When Jack finally had sometime off, Sam had somewhere else to be. He was competing in a scholastic decathlon in New York City. When in New York, the storms began to grow, it was pouring at first and then hail began to pelt down. Sam and his friends hurried to the library to get inside and knew it was the only safe thing to do. The temperatures continued to drop in New York until it started snowing heavily. The snow was not slowing down or stopping anytime soon, so Sam and his friends had to stay in the library until they could go to their hotel. Well, the snow did not stop it began to accumulate and reach unheard of heights. Everything began to freeze. Because Sam's dad had taught him a lot about the weather and storms Sam knew that he would not be able to survive without starting a fire to keeping warm.
The temperatures continued to drop and New York was becoming a frozen city. Ship floated from the Ocean into the streets of New York from the heavy flooding. People were dying from unannounced extreme weather and the freezing temperatures. Jack knew the weather conditions were going to get worse. He went on a journey to find and save his son. Because there was no transportation available he had to walk all the way from Washington DC to New York City. The snow was high enough that it was blocking the doors of many buildings and continuing to fall. When Sam was trying to stay alive in the library, he began to realize how little time he spent with family. His father began to realize this too along with needed to ease up on his son so that he would actually want to talk to his father. The major theme of this book is to always remember to let the ones you love know how you feel about them and that you never know what may happen. This is what Jack and Sam both realized when they knew there was a chance they may never see each other again. The book taught me that before I leave my house I should not only say goodbye but also tell my mom I love her.
I would definitely recommend this book to others because it teaches you valuable life lessons that you will never forget. If you love stories about survival and books with important lessons, you should without a doubt read The Day after Tomorrow! This book has great suspense and keeps you reading right up to the end. The beginning may seem a little dull, but just keep reading and you will soon be hooked!
I like it chilly, 2006-10-28 I've been a fan of Striebers work since I read The Wolfen back in 88. I knew the man had some talent after reading the book. Unlike a lot of other horror authors at the time, he went with a scientific angle rather than a supernatural one. The Day after Tomorrow is really no different. The movie is based off of one of his earlier books so it only makes sense that he'd write the movie book as well.
The movie and the book are dumbed down for the typical american. But if they had gone the highbrow route, most of the audience would have been confused and then we'd all feel bad for the slow people in the audience and at the bookstore. However, this book is good for those who love the movie and want more. They should start off with The Coming Global Superstorm by Strieber and Bell first, then get this one. Do these books have a leftist agenda? No, they do cater to those who worry about the environment though. You know, those people with a brain who can actually comprehend global warming, this does however does exclude the republican party. But hey, they tried to dumb down the movie so that even republicans could understand it, I don't think it worked though.
