Season 1: When the first series of Friends debuted in September 1994 it was immediately obvious there would be no need for the show to find its feet. "The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate" was a confident introduction to the six lead characters, opening in the middle of an everyday conversation with the soon-to-be uncharacteristic line: "There's nothing to tell". In fact, the soap-opera style plot got complicated pretty quickly, with spoiled brat Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) moving on from her failed wedding to feelings toward nerdy/heart-throb Ross (David Schwimmer). However, no love life was more complicated than Joey's (Matt LeBlanc), with an endless stream of girlfriends that annoyed the hell out of wisecracking roommate Chandler (Matthew Perry), who only seemed to be able to connect with Janice (Maggie Wheeler), the shrillest voice in the City. Bouncing all manner of neuroses around them were Ross' obsessive sister Monica (Courteney Cox) and endearingly ditzy Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow). Premise established, series 1 matured the characters by providing a monkey and a son for Ross. We met also meet Ross and Monica's parents Jack (Elliott Gould) and Judy (Christina Pickles), Chandler's mother (Morgan Fairchild) and Phoebe's twin sister Ursula (Kudrow naturally). Fans loved cameos from George Clooney, Jay Leno and show creators Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane. But really the focus was on building to "TOW Rachel Finds Out" that Ross is in love with her. --Paul Tonks
Customer reviews: Friends - series 1 - episodes 17-24 (1995), 2004-02-22 The very first series of friends couldn't have ended better. This dvd is the last out of three (episodes 1-8, 9-16 and 17-24), and contains eight episodes, which are the following: The one with the two parts (part 2): Monica and Rachel squabble over two handsome doctors, ER stars George Clooney and Noah Wyle. The one with the poker: The girls lose money in a poker game with the boys - after getting advice from a champion card player, they demand a rematch. The one where the monkey gets away: Rachel accidentally lets Ross's pet monkey escape and the friends form a search party. Then she finds out that her best friend is engaged to marry her ex-fiancee. The one with the evil orthodontist: Rachel has a brief encounter with her ex-fiancee, even though he is now going out with her best friend Mindy. Riddled with guilt, she decides to confess her evil sins only to discover that Mindy has betrayed her when she was engaged to Barry too! The one with the fake Monica: Monica meets a woman who helps her live out her fantasies. Ross's monkey becomes sexually mature and drives everyone crazy. The one with the ick factor: Monica discovers that she is a cradle snatcher - Ross's ex-wife bigins giving birth. The one with the birth: The baby is born, bringing smiles and adoration from everyone. The one where Rachel finds out: Rachel finds out about Ross's secret love for her - but another surprise awaits her... Great ending to an even greater series of one of the worlds' best situation comedies ever! Destiny awaits the six friends from New York in even more interesting episodes in the furure! By it now, it is a must have!
Some may say the first series of 'Friends' was the best..., 2000-12-12 Chandler was unlucky in love, Ross was still getting over his leasbian ex-wife while falling in love with Rachel, Joey and Chandler shared an apartment, Monica was struggling to get a job and Phoebe was as quirky as ever. Yes, it's the first series of Friends! The episodes on this disc are some of the funniest ever, 'The One With The Stoned Guy' and 'The One With The Fake Monica' being the highlights for me. It's one of the best season finalés that the show has had, about the culmination of Ross's obsession of Rachel when Chandler lets it slip at Rachel's birthday party. All in all, great value with eight episodes, and a great treat for any Friends fan! And if you haven't seen these episodes you can't really call yourself a fan.
