Customer reviews: A treat for those mourning the Buffyverse, 2006-08-09 For Joss Whedon fans, the finale of Angel Season 5, or indeed the closing moments of Buffy Season 7 represent a sort of sad demise for them. For many, Buffy and Angel represent times in their lives, something they once resonated with, but without it find themselves feeling bleak and unsatisfied.
This, then, will satiate your Buffyverse needs. Written by Mutant Enemy alumni Jane Espenson, Brett Matthews, Drew Goddard and Ben Edlund, as well as the legendary Whedon himself, you'll fill the void with this witty, often dark collection of vampire stories.
The stories span a number of timelines(and you should read all of them), but as a Whedon fan myself, I know you seek something else; our characters. The ones you saw on TV, and miss everytime you see reruns. You know who I'm talking about! Buffy, Spike, Angel and the gang...
I can safely say that the former 3, as well as Drusilla, all feature prominently in their own mini-stories. Buffy once again faces Dracula, only this time its POST- SEASON 7(we all know that's what we're looking for, we crave more stories!). She's paired up with her once-potential slayers in a funny tale that will no doubt make you misty-eyed once you've reached its end.
A great Spike/Drusilla story, set shortly before their arrival in Sunnydale will also appeal to the craving fan. A short, twisted love story will appeal to obsessive fans of these characters. Very good.
The last story, however, "Numb", is an Angel story. Set in LA around season 2, this great introspective tale will take you back to the sad, lonely life of Angel and his constant struggles to come to grips with his past. Another awesome story, that rounds out the collection nicely. Love it.
The whole thing is glued together by a well-written Whedon story set in the Watcher's mansion in England, and the tale links the stories appropriately. Brilliant, yet again.
To be honest with you, the other stories are worth checking out as well. The characters you haven't heard of are a goldmine waiting to be...mined.
The art is excellent as well, and much credit should go to Tim Sale, who draws an excellent story written by the sadly late Sam Loeb. The other artists really bring the stories to life.
I'd make further reference to the artists, but the real reason the Buffy fan is here are the writers. These are genuine moments of joy, the kind you haven't had since Angel Season 5. Bathe in these moments, because I'm not sure we'll ever see the Buffyverse in another form. Buy the Tales of The Slayers anthology for more stories like this.
This is only something that can be done in comic form, yet it remains true to the world Whedon created on Television. Joss is genius, and his fans will lap this up. A natural successor to a fantastic universe.
nice book, 2005-03-12 nice book, good drawings. never read a comic before but i enjoyed this. some of the stories i found hard to follow but overall it was enjoyable. i am a massive buffy fan and the comics are no substitute for watching buffy but are good for what they are. Overall, A good read for any buffy fan.
