Ally McBeal has dominated television for three years, so why not a Christmas album for fans who number 20 million or more? Truth be told, this is really a Vonda Shepard record (she's Ally's TV singing voice), with a little help from the McBeal cast, including Ally (née Calista Flockhart), who successfully tries on Eartha Kitt's silly, sassy, seductive "Santa Baby." With 14 tracks and Macy Gray's distinctive "Winter Wonderland" included, the album covers lots of turf, as Shepard and company cover hymns and carols that are sparsely arranged and appealing for their soulful simplicity. Shepard's soprano talent continues to reveal its many riches. Here's a singer who's at home in a gut-bucket blues tune such as "Please Come Home for Christmas" and strolling down Broadway, joyfully swinging on "The Man with the Bag." Additional surprises include Shepard's duet with Robert Downey Jr. on "White Christmas" and Joni Mitchell's "River." Recommended. --Martin KellerCustomer reviews: A great Christmas album that is worth listening to., 2008-08-04 This is a great Christmas album from Miss Shepard. she puts her influence into these holiday songs, and she does it so perfectly, that it touches your heart. I usually don't like the pop-flavored Christmas classics they release every year, but this holiday album from Miss Vonda Shepard, and the Ally McBeal cast was surprising to listen to, especially the song of "The Man With The Bag". Miss Shepard's rendition of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" was so touching that I almost cried, because the way she sings it was absolutely with so much emotion and soul. The Ally McBeal cast also does a good job on four of the songs. Robert Downey Jr.'s version of the song "River" was pleasant to my ears, as well as the song "White Christmas" which was sang with him and Miss Shepard. This Cd comes highly recommended.
Thank you, Miss Shepard for this touching holiday Cd. Much love to you. I love you with all my heart and soul.
ALLY MCBEAL CHRISTMAS ALBUM, 2008-01-22 I heard a song on the radio during the Christmas Holidays and fell in love with it. It was done by a female singer and I was trying to describe it to my daughter. I told her it was about a river. She immediately knew the song done by Robert Downey Jr. on a Christmas Ally McBeal CD. I borrowed hers until I found "my own" and ordered it from Amazon. It's an amazing Christmas CD. Especially Robert Downey JR's version of "The River" ! I ordered it and before I knew it, it was here! Just as described on amazon.com I even missed ((yeah!!)) going to the crowded mall during the Christmas rush. Thank Goodness for Amazon.com!
