Season 1: When the first series of Friends debuted in September 1994, it was immediately obvious there would be no need for the show to find its feet. "The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate" was a confident introduction to the six lead characters, opening in the middle of an everyday conversation with the soon-to-be uncharacteristic line: "There's nothing to tell". In fact, the soap opera-style plot got complicated pretty quickly, with spoiled brat Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) moving on from her failed wedding to feelings toward nerdy/heartthrob Ross (David Schwimmer). However, no love life was more complicated than Joey's (Matt LeBlanc), with an endless stream of girlfriends that annoyed the hell out of wisecracking roommate Chandler (Matthew Perry), who only seemed to be able to connect with Janice (Maggie Wheeler), the shrillest voice in the city. Bouncing all manner of neuroses around them were Ross' obsessive sister Monica (Courteney Cox) and endearingly ditzy Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow). Premise established, Series 1 matured the characters by providing a monkey and a son for Ross. We met also meet Ross and Monica's parents Jack (Elliott Gould) and Judy (Christina Pickles), Chandler's mother (Morgan Fairchild) and Phoebe's twin sister Ursula (Kudrow, naturally). Fans loved cameos from George Clooney, Jay Leno and show creators Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane. But really the focus was on building to "T.O.W. Rachel Finds Out" that Ross is in love with her. --Paul Tonks
Customer reviews: The Friends we've always known, cherished and loved, 2004-04-05 This second video in the first Friends series features anothe four fantastic episodes that each have a unique style that makes them great: The One With The East German Laundry Detergent: The key element of fun here is where Rachel accidentally washes all her clothes pink! Chandler's break-up with Janice is also excellent fun.
The One With The Butt: Joey finally gets a film role (great), alongside Al Pacino (even better), but as his butt! (not so good) The One With The Blackout: New York City has no power, and the milk is getting sour. And Ross gets attacked by a cat that belongs to an attractive Italian guy that Rachel ends up falling for. Fantastic! The One Where Nana Dies Twice: She dies once, comes back to life, then dies again. Weird but great. This old Friends additions are well worth the missing holes in anyone's collection! Classic Friends!, 2000-10-28 This video combines some of the best episodes of Friends seen. It contains The One With the East German Laundry Detergent where Ross and Rachel have fun and the laundrette, The One With The Butt where Joey gets the role of Al Pacino's bum and gets fired for overacting, The One With the Blackout sees New York plunge into darkness causing Rachel to meet Paulo and Chandler to be trapped in a vestibule with Julie Goodacre finally The One Where Nana Dies Twice sees Monica and Ross' Nana die, come back to life and die again. As ever the Friends are hillarious and this video's worth buying just for The One With the Blackout.
